Drive in the Country

The limo drove out past Nellis and into the deep desert proper before John broached the subject. "Ike, I need to talk to you about something, and I need you to understand that I'm working off a pretty delicate piece of intel that I'd really rather not disclose, but just like so much of what Josh gave you during the war turned out to be diamond encrusted solid gold, well, we've got good sources. Sources that might not be as reliable if they were outed. Can we build off that shared history?"

Ike looked at him intently, searching for the hook inside the bait, "Okay... I'll bite, you do always seem to have the inside track on things. What is it that you need John?"

John took a deep breath and let it out slowly, "I need you to run for president." He said this in a rush to get it out there. Then he held up his hand to stop the immediate refusal.

"Remember, you agreed to hear me out."

He grinned at the General, "I don't blame you. I wouldn’t wish that job on an enemy, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be done and done well. You're the most honorable man who also has the name recognition to do the job. I don't say this to blow smoke up your ass, you have your flaws like everyone else, but I don't believe you spent a lifetime as a military officer taking both dangerous but glamorous jobs, as well as what amounts to skutt work for a man of your connections, if you didn't really love the country. My only other real option is Patton, and hell you managed the man through the war. Can you imagine trying to get him down the campaign trail?"

That brought a sympathetic chuckle from Ike. "Since you put it that way, I'm listening. George is a good man but damn it he's a Prima donna."

He laughed again, "I remember one time... well, that isn't important, it's just that I understand your reluctance."

John grinned at him, "He owes me a pretty big favor. He doesn't know he owes it to me, but if we ever need him on our side, I can prove our involvement in saving his life."

That startled Ike, who looked at him with obvious intent to ask more about it. John held up his hand to forestall him, "You remember that Soviet Plot to sabotage his personal jeep?"

When Ike nodded, John shook his head. "Wasn't the Soviets. It was an inside job. There is a small but powerful group that didn't really want a victorious General Patton back home. They figured that he would have too much influence in matters that they wanted complete control of."

John shrugged, "I'm not saying that they are completely wrong either. George is great in war, but hell to manage in peace, I just don't believe that you handle it by murdering the man."

Ike looked at him a little boggle eyed, "You have proof?"

John shook his head, "They're too good for that.
